Located on the edge of a lush forest in Cameroon (west-central Africa), Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue provides sanctuary for 75 chimpanzees, orphaned as a result of the illegal bushmeat trade. Founded and directed by a U.S. veterinarian, the project offers an unforgettable opportunity to live and work in close proximity to a number of amazing animals. Volunteers are needed throughout the year to assist with day-to-day operations of the sanctuary and to pitch in wherever needed most. Appointments are normally for 6 months, but for Summer 2019, we are also offering 3-month appointments.

Tasks include:
- helping with chimpanzee feeding
- washing, cutting & distributing fruit
- painting cages & maintaining camp equipment
- buying food & supplies in town
- helping with part-time care of baby chimps IF needed
- working with Cameroonian staff (most speak French)

Note: limited contact with chimpanzees occurs during daily feedings and this summer (2019) there is also a limited opportunity to help care for a baby chimp.

- Minimum 21 yrs and paid work experience
- Fluent in English or French: if fluent in English, conversational French strongly preferred (and vice versa)
- Good general health and physical stamina; able to lift up to 40 lbs.
- Able to adapt easily to changing tasks/schedules and to basic living conditions in an isolated setting

- University degree
- Work experience as part of a group or project team
- Experience living, or spending extended time, in a developing country (preferably Africa)
- Prior experience working with chimpanzees or other great apes

For veterinarians, medical personnel, mechanics, and engineers, qualifications and length of stay are negotiable ...please inquire.

This is an unpaid position; no travel expenses, research grants or stipends are provided. If accepted as a volunteer, there is a one-time processing fee of US$300 due 2 weeks after acceptance, but no other project fees are charged to participate.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Lodging and vegetarian meals are provided at the site at no cost to volunteers.

Term of Appointment:
Normally 6-month stays, but for summer 2019, we are offering 3-month stays .
