Located on the edge of the forest in Cameroon, west-central Africa, the Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center seeks volunteers for 6-month stays to assist with day-to-day operations at the sanctuary. Tasks include working with Cameroonian staff (who speak French), helping with chimpanzee feeding, cage cleaning and care, buying food and supplies in town, maintaining camp facilities and equipment, painting, and assisting with other manual tasks. Volunteers pitch in wherever needed most. Contact with chimpanzees occurs during daily feedings but hands-on contact with baby chimps is very limited and occurs only when Cameroonian staff are not available.

Special Short-term Need: we are also seeking volunteers for 12-14 week stays to provide daily care for Arvid, a juvenile chimpanzee who is paralyzed. Tasks include feeding, bathing, litfing, providing enrichment, giving medication and following physical therapy protocols. Arvid at times is frustrated with his condition and impaired mobility, but he is slowly making progress. Volunteers must have patience (daily tasks can be repetitious), compassion, an enthusiastic, optimistic spirit, and be committed to helping Arvid in whatever way is needed.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Minimum 21 yrs and paid work experience
- Experience living, or spending extended time, in a developing country (preferably Africa) OR prior experience working with chimpanzees or other great apes
- Fluent in English or French: if fluent in English, conversational French strongly preferred (and vice versa)
- Good general health and physical stamina; able to lift up to 45 lbs.
- Able to adapt easily to changing tasks/ schedules, basic living conditions, and to living with a small group in an isolated setting
PREFER:
- University degree
- Work experience as part of a group or project team

Lodging and vegetarian meals are provided at the site. No travel expenses, research grants or stipends provided.
Term of Appointment:
6 months for regular volunteers. 12-14 weeks for Arvid volunteers.
