The Centre for Animal Rehabilitation and Education (C.A.R.E.), located in Phalaborwa, South Africa, is a wildlife rehabilitation sanctuary dedicated to the care, welfare, rehabilitation and protection of injured and orphaned indigenous wild animals. The centre has been specialising in chacma baboons for over 26 years, actively pursuing their rescue, rehabilitation and release. Freedom is the end goal for all the incredible beings that need our help, but for our dear elderly residents and most psychologically damaged individuals; we offer a permanent home, a sanctuary.

We are looking for a qualified veterinarian who can commit to a minimum of 2 weeks to cover the period of; Jan 25th until March

As the vet, you will be responsible for the care and treatment of all baboons who are admitted to the clinic.

Your duties include (but are not limited to):

* Running the veterinary clinic (includes cleaning, medicating, observing patients)
* Working closely with the management staff to determine care of patients
* Supervising, training and engaging with any extra vets or vet nurses who come to volunteer
* Providing a learning experience for volunteers (usually a fecal sample/test lesson)
* Developing enrichment for baboons in the clinic
* Maintaining clinic records (both on paper and electronically)
* Ensuring that the clinic and surrounding area is clean and presentable on a daily basis

This position is open to qualified veterinarians and VET NURSES only. 1-2 years clinical experience require is ideal. This is open mostly to those qualified in a UK, US or Australian university due to South Africa's requirements to practice.

You are:
* A qualified veterinarian vet nurse withideally at least 1-2 years professional experience (primate experience a plus)
* You are a competent, calm and attentive person who is happy to work as part of a small team
* You are able to work in basic facilities with limited resources
* You are happy to live on-site in a communal living arrangement
* You are happy to be on-call 24 hours a day while on-site
* You enjoy working with other volunteers and are happy to teach when asked

no salary is available at the moment

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
You must cover any visa costs, flights/travel to the centre (we will pick you up from Phalaborwa). However, once with us we provide food/lodging/internet access/electricity/hot, running water
You may live in basic, shared housing with up to 2 roommates at a time.

Founded in 1989 by the late Rita Miljo, C.A.R.E. is the worldâ??s largest rehabilitation and release centre that deals primarily with chacma baboons. Currently housing over 400 individuals, C.A.R.E. rehabilitates young baboons, mainly orphaned due to human-wildlife conflict with the end goal of re-releasing them back into the wild as part of a fully-formed, cohesive troop.
