Hiring Organization:
Vervet Monkey Foundation

Date Posted:
2019-09-28

Position Description:
The VMF is looking for volunteers to assist with daily monkey care tasks, especially for this upcoming orphan season. Each year from November-March, the VMF takes in dozens of rescued orphan vervets and offers them a chance at a natural life integrated in our onsite rehabilitated troops. Our well established Foster Mum Programme has worked to find foster families for hundreds of orphaned babies throughout the years and we need your help to make it work!

Our volunteers assist our Baby Care Team in caring for the infant monkeys until they are old enough to meet their foster mums and eventually join the onsite troops. During your time here, you may be assisting with:

- Making and distributing baby milk bottles
- Observing and caring for the infants in our nursery (potentially with overnight care shifts as well)
- Assisting our Integration team to introduce them to their new families
- Gathering forage and enrichment for other onsite monkeys
- Preparing food for the monkeys
- Maintenance and building projects
- Caring for our geriatric and sickly monkeys in our Sickbay Area
- Much, much more!

We always welcome volunteers who may have specialised skills, such as graphic or website design, construction skills, veterinary or more. If you have other skills that could be helpful for us, please let us know!

Qualifications/Experience:
We welcome individuals from all ages and walks of life, all we ask is for your dedication and commitment to the monkeys.

Some of our volunteer tasks are quite physical and may involve working in the South African heat. The foundation is located on a hill.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
During your volunteer experience, you will stay in wooden cabins in our Volunteer Village where there is no electricity. Opportunities to upgrade to cabins with electricity and more private wash facilities are available for an additional fee. Meals, free wifi and charging ports are available at our volunteer cottage. All food provided is vegan
(no animal products).

The VMF is located 30 km outside Tzaneen where there are supermarkets and modern shopping malls, as well as emergency clinic, dentist and restaurants.

All airfare, visa fees, medical insurance and other travel expenses are the responsibility of the volunteer.

Comments:
There are opportunities to visit Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon (either with our trusted tour guide or on your own) to make your South African experience truly unforgettable! We also offer half day weekend trips for our volunteers to see different sites around Tzaneen, including the Debegni Waterfalls and other beautiful local areas.
