Position Description:
A Senior Research Specialist position is available at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) in the laboratory of Dr. Ei Terasawa for an ambitious and highly motivated individual for research in Neuroscience. The laboratory specializes in studying cell-molecular mechanisms of hypothalamic neurons in nonhuman primates. The successful applicant for this position will actively participate in the research and will be responsible for following approved animal, biosafety, and radio-imaging protocols.

The applicant will initially be introduced to the standard procedures used for animal care and handling at the WNPRC, and will be required to obtain a UW animal care and handling certification from Research Animal Resources and Compliance (RARC), as well as complete radiation safety certification from the UW Safety Department. Additional relevant training and certification may be required as needed.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:
30% - General laboratory management, including: financial, project and data management, general administrative research support, and safety and compliance.
25% - Animal experiments per approved IACUC protocols .
25% - Technical research support, including: cell culture experiments (culture of stem cells and primary cells, in vitro perfusion, and calcium imaging), radioimmunoassays, molecular biology, tissue processing, and immunohistochemistry.
20% - Oversight of students, including: training of both graduate and undergraduate students, and supervision and scheduling of undergraduate students.

Qualifications/Experience:
BS/BA in a biological science or related field required. Advanced degree holders are encouraged to apply.

This position requires a minimum of 4-7 years of previous related laboratory experience. Must be able to work with animals in vivo as part of a team, as well as with cell cultures in vitro. At least two years previous experience working with laboratory animals in a research setting required. Experience in handling and manipulation of nonhuman primates, such as rhesus macaques, and an ability to obtain venous blood samples from nonhuman primates is strongly preferred.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required. Prior experience with web-based databases preferred. Must be able to work independently, as well as part of a team. Candidate should understand research principles and regulations, be detail oriented, and possess excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Seven or more years of relevant professional laboratory experience is required for appointment at the Senior-level.

The minimum salary for the no-prefix Research Specialist will be $43,000. The minimum salary for the Senior Research Specialist will be $50,000.

-Must be TB negative.
-Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication.
-Measles titer required within first week of employment, and if necessary, immunization will be required.
-Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate WNPRC vehicles.
-A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.
-A one-year period of evaluation will be required.
