Position Description:
WNPRC Veterinary Services activities are primarily divided into two areas of emphasis: Clinical Care and Protocol Implementation. Veterinary Services provides the medical and technical coverage to meet the ever-expanding needs of the animals and researchers at the Primate Center, and the UW. The WNPRC houses nonhuman primates across three locations: the central location in the heart of the UW campus in downtown Madison, the WIMR facility located near the UW Hospital, and the Blue Mounds Quarantine (BMQ) facility located 30 minutes southwest of Madison.

The successful candidate will work with a team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, animal care staff, and diverse research units. WNPRC veterinarians are responsible for providing daily medical care to nonhuman primates used in biomedical research. Duties include but are not limited to:

60% - Perform daily health observations on nonhuman primate colony, conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat injury and disease, perform dental care, institute preventative health programs, perform or assist in clinical or research surgeries, and implement post-operative care, and thoroughly document as required.
30% - Provide research support by assisting with review and amendment of protocols, ensure compliance of approved protocols, support and perform experimental procedures and diagnostic tests.
10% - Mentor and supervise junior staff, including conducting performance reviews.

In addition, opportunities exist for further training and participation in specific areas of research support based on experience or individual interest, including but not limited to: reproductive research, infectious disease, aging, and diagnostic imaging.

Degree and area of specialization:
D.V.M or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited school of Veterinary Medicine, or successful completion of ECFVG program.

Must be eligible for Veterinary licensure and accreditation in the State of Wisconsin. ACLAM board eligibility also preferred but not required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least one year of experience as a Veterinarian strongly preferred. Prior experience with nonhuman primates in a research setting will be considered in lieu of post-graduate veterinary experience for appointment at Assistant-level.

Two years of experience with nonhuman primates in a laboratory setting required for appointment at the Associate-level. Advanced surgical skills and previous supervisory experience also strongly preferred.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.

The WNPRC is NIH funded by a P51 base grant.
