Animal care and rehabilitation in Maikuchiga Foundation Center, Colombian Amazon

Position Description:
Maikuchiga's mission is to contribute to the development of systems in which the care and rehabilitation of Amazonian animals confiscated from the illegal trade in wildlife is linked to coherent and effective programs of ecosystem conservation, environmental education in its broadest sense, and participative research.

The rehabilitation center is located in the indigenous community of Mocagua, next to Amazonas river. It is around 20 minutes walking from the village and surrounded by rainforest.

Volunteers will be responsible of:

- Daily care of the animals housed in the center: feeding, cleaning, enrichment.
- Monitor the rehabilitation process of the animals.
- Guided tours for tourists and visitors.
- Develop environmental education programs for local communities and visitors.
- Maintenance of the rehabilitation center.
- Monitoring wild populations.

- 18 yr. or older.
- Must have primate care experience.
- Able to commit a minimum of three months.
- Be very independent and proactive to develop daily care and monitorings without supervision. Willing to improve animal care by her/himself and develop new projects related to conservation and education (supervision is minimum, or doesn't exist, for most of the projects).
- Medium level of spanish and english.
- Respect local indigenous culture and rules. No alcohol or drugs are allowed in the center.
- Be quiet at night to respect the monkeys housed in the center.
- Cope with isolation, no electricity most of the day and other animals that live around the center (spiders, scorpions, etc.) and local food (food can be bought at the village, but there is not a wide variety).

No salary provided

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Housing is provided in the center (there are two basic rooms with beds and mosquito nets).
Volunteers have to provide their own meals, but kitchen facilities are provided by the center.
Volunteers need pay for their flights and personal insurance
