Position Description:
Location: Tchimpounga Nature Reserve, Pointe Noire, Republic of the Congo

Reporting directly to the TCRC Sanctuary Manager and the JGI Congo Executive Director, the Assistant Manager will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day management of operations at the Center?s Kouilou River Islands sites ensuring all welfare, veterinary and other standard operating procedures are being implemented correctly. Subject to requirement, the successful candidate may on occasion also be deployed to oversight
activities at JGI?s other sites including but not limited to the main TCRC site and the Mandrill Release Site in the nearby Conkouati Douli National Park.

Primary responsibilities include:
- Assist the Sanctuary Manager with day to day management of multiple chimpanzee sanctuary
sites, implementing established and accredited Standard Operating Procedures
- Management and oversight of teams of staff including chimpanzee caregivers, veterinary
support staff, scientific researchers and administrative and custodial staff
- Development and maintenance of physical infrastructure including enclosures, cages, transfer
facilities, staff accommodation, storage buildings and other fixed and mobile assets including
boats, outboard engines and vehicles
- Logistical Management including organizing regular supply runs, stock control and asset
- Supervision of all aspects of animal husbandry, diets, operant conditioning and enrichment
- Development of staff through on the job and formal training and skills development
- Support to and oversight of approved scientific research projects
- Oversight and management of basic tourism activities at the Kouilou Islands sites

Other responsibilities may include:
- Where required, assist with the prepare and submit monthly narrative and financial reports
- Support the Sanctuary Manger and Executive Director with hosting site visits by other JGI staff,
Congolese partners (including Government officials, funding partners and individual donors)
- Other related tasks as identified and agreed with the Sanctuary Manager or Executive Director,
JGI Congo

Work Environment:
The position will be mainly based at the Kouilou River Islands site of the TCRC with occasional travel to
and residence at other JGI sites as agreed and subject to requirement. All sites are in remote and challenging locations but offer basic accommodation and other amenities. The role will require a high level of physical fitness and mobility.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate:
- Fluent French language skills with a demonstrable bilingual ability (including writing) in English
being desirable but not essential
- Prior experience of animal welfare, sanctuary management or other conservation related
project implementation in Africa
- Experience of managing staff in a multicultural environment
- Empathy for animals with a strong interest in animal behavior
- The ability to maintain a positive attitude toward physically and mentally challenging work in
remote and basic conditions
- Proactivity, a good sense of humor, self-reliance, and adventurous team spirit;
- The ability to manage with limited communication including minimal access to telephone and
internet connectivity
- Excellent social and communication skills and the ability to live and work alongside team
members from different countries and cultures and with a wide range of backgrounds and skills
