Primate Research Intern

Position Description:
Job Purpose:
1) Support Zoo Atlanta?s research efforts with emphasis on the primate behavioral and cognitive research; 2) support the research and conservation efforts of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.

The internship is 40 hours a week. Job responsibilities will be evenly split between efforts with Zoo Atlanta and with Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.

Zoo responsibilities (20 hours per week) will include:
?Daily behavioral observations on gorillas and other species,
?Cognitive testing sessions with apes
?Data entry and management
?Public talks and demonstrations,
?Assisting with animal husbandry 4 hours a week
?Potential opportunities to pursue independent research projects
?Must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta?s Vision, Mission and Values statement
?Must be able to comply with all safety policies and procedures

Fossey Fund responsibilities (20 hours per week) will include:
?Data cleaning and entry
?Digital media archiving
?Educational outreach with potential opportunities to use the long-term data to conduct independent analyses

Knowledge: BA in psychology, biology, zoology or related field. Previous research experience strongly recommended, as is knowledge of Excel, electronic data collection techniques, behavioral observations, data entry, and basic descriptive statistics.

Special skills and abilities: Previous experience working/volunteering at an AZA-accredited facility preferred. Position limited to US nationals, unless already in the United States with a working visa.

Zoo Atlanta is open to the public 363 days out of the year, therefore, all positions at Zoo Atlanta may require employees to work some weekends, holidays and evenings.

EDUCATION: BA in psychology, biology, zoology or related field.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires physical activity; must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.

Monthly stipend provided - $750/month

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
