General Summary

The Non-Human Primate Specialist is responsible for conducting positive reinforcement training, behavioral observations, and environmental enrichment for nonhuman primates and other laboratory animal species. 50% of this individual?s effort will be spent to oversee and conduct an already-established training program for nonhuman primates to cooperate with scientific procedures. The other 50% effort will primarily be spent in behavioral assessments, behavioral management, and social housing of nonhuman primates and other large laboratory animals, though a portion of effort may be used to assist in preparing and providing environmental enrichment as needed. This individual will report directly to the Behavior Program Laboratory Manager.

Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for conducting positive reinforcement training of nonhuman primates and other laboratory animals for cooperation with common experimental manipulations and procedures.
Collect and maintain accurate and complete training documentation.
Create and edit shaping plans for training of complex behaviors
Organize and guide the efforts of a team of animal trainers in coordination with relevant research staff.
Effectively communicate shaping plans, animal progress, and program goals to other trainers and research staff.
Trouble-shoot shaping plans and efforts of other trainers.
Attend research laboratory meetings, as requested.
Communicate, understand and relay relevant research and veterinary medical terminology.
Maintain good rapport and professional relationships with the investigators and fellow employees and emphasizes team building and cooperation.
Review and/or generate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as requested.
Provide training on positive reinforcement training to investigators as well as technical and caretaking staff.
Monitors psychological well-being of nonhuman primates and other laboratory animals
Creates and adjusts behavior management plans for animals requiring special attention
Conducts social introductions of nonhuman primates and other laboratory species
Maintains database of behavioral observations, management, and socializations
As needed, prepare and distribute environmental enrichments to animals


High school diploma or GED. Minimum of 1 year?s related work experience required. Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) is required after 15 months of employment. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred qualifications

Associate?s degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science or Biology preferred. Experience with nonhuman primates and/or experience with larger species preferred. Background in Psychology, Zoology, Anthropology, Animal Behavior, or ability to demonstrate appropriate understanding in animal behavior is preferred. Previous history conducting or assisting in research projects in behavioral psychology, field biology (animal) or ethology preferred.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities

Must be knowledgeable in basic animal behavior of non-human primates and other laboratory species.
Specific knowledge or experience in positive reinforcement training of animals is preferred.
Must be proficient in written and oral communication skills.
Must be efficient, well organized and able to work well independently and with others.
Some knowledge of IBM-compatible computers, Word, Excel and database systems are preferred.

Environmental conditions

The employee works predominantly in an indoor facility, which is environmentally controlled but will be required to work out doors on occasion. The employee may be required to walk from building to building both through the indoor and outdoor walkways. Job will require travel between campuses.

The employee must be able to wear protective gear, including respirators, without adverse effects. The employee handles animals and may be exposed to the animals? body excretions and fluids. The employee may sustain an occasional scratch or bite, and may be exposed to pathogenic microorganisms at the BSL2 and BSL-3 levels.
