Volunteer Facilitator- Matang Wildlife Centre

Hiring Organization:
Orangutan Project

Date Posted:
2018-06-24

Position Description:
Orangutan Project Sdn Bhd is a Malaysian conservation company. We are also registered as a UK based charity under the name ProjectBorneo Ltd. We manage a volunteer Project at Matang Wildlife Centre in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. At Matang we work closely in partnership with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) who hold the overall responsibility for the centre. Matang is the only centre on the entire island of Borneo that accepts all species of wildlife in need and hence there is always work to be done and improvements to be made. Our volunteer project enables us to provide the best daily care possible whilst also making improvements to animal housing areas, thus improving their long-term welfare.

Volunteer facilitators are critical, without them a volunteer project wouldn't add any value and may actually become a strain on the centre. Whilst the successful applicant will be working alongside amazing wildlife and making a significant contribution to their welfare this role is predominantly about managing humans. We can't expect a group of people who don't know each other or the centre to effectively work together to achieve meaningful outcomes in a two or four week period and thats where a volunteer facilitator comes in!
Facilitators lead groups of volunteers on tasks which have a very obvious, immediate impact on the welfare of the animals. The four main areas where volunteers provide support are: animal husbandry, animal enrichment, construction and maintenance.

Specific Responsibilities:
-Facilitate small groups of paying volunteers on animal related tasks including but not limited to; husbandry, food preparation, enrichment, construction and centre maintenance.
-Do airport transfers and welcome dinners for paying volunteers
-Welcome volunteers to Matang and take them on a tour of the centre when they arrive.
-Take volunteers grocery shopping
-Spend some time socialising with volunteers after work to give them an opportunity to learn more about some broader conservation and welfare issues.
-Present wildlife and conservation videos for the volunteers.
-Assist volunteers to make weekend plans by helping them book transport and accommodation
-Write volunteer work schedules.
-General help with whatever is needed
-Occasionally you may be asked to assist with the care of an infant or injured animal. In which case your schedule may change suddenly and you may need to cope with some relatively sleepless nights.

Qualifications/Experience:
Previous experience living or working in the developing world is preferred but not necessarily required if the applicant can demonstrate via skype interview that they understand some of the complexities and challenges associated with volunteering in the developing world.

We are seeking like-minded peers who can self regulate and project manage. This is a project management position rather than a rigidly defined role. As such you should view yourself less like a "staff" member and more like a project manager who reports to more senior member of the team. You will need to be a confident and enthusiastic leader who can inspire others.

It is not essential that facilitators have any prior specific training or skills. However, the successful applicant should research some of the species at Matang, specifically Orangutans, Sun bears and Macaques so that they can speak confidently and knowledgeably to volunteers. It would also be advisable for the successful applicant to make themselves familiar with our enrichment catalogue which is available on our website.

Salary/funding:
This is a voluntary position without a salary.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
We will provide accommodation as well as a monthly food stipend. This is a voluntary position without a salary. The successful applicant must commit to a minimum of 6 months with the possibility to extend. Upon completion of 12 months one international flight will be reimbursed.
