RESEARCH POSITION: COMPARATIVE COGNITION AND SOCIALITY IN SYMPATRIC CHIMPANZEES AND MANGABEYS IN THE TAÏ NATIONAL PARK, CÔTE D?IVOIRE

Hiring Organization:
Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology

Date Posted:
2018-05-04

Position Description:
We are offering a research position (on PhD or Post-doc level) working on questions of cognition and sociality in sympatric wild chimpanzees and mangabeys. The position will start in October 2018, and will potentially take two 9 months field seasons for data collection at the Taï Chimpanzee Project, Cote d?Ivoire (www.taichimps.org).

Our general interest is to understand the differences of sociality and cognition between apes and monkeys. We are interested to investigate cognitive abilities of the two species with the same field experiments and relate the results to differences in sociality. We will accept proposals on any question in the realm of sociality and cognition.

Qualifications/Experience:
MSc (or comparable degree) in Biology, evolutionary Anthropology or evolutionary Psychology. Good knowledge in evolutionary biology, animal behavior and ecology are crucial for a successful application. Previous observations and detailed behavioural data collection on wild mammals are of advantage. The candidate will need to work independently in a remote and physically demanding tropical forest habitat and will be expected to manage a small team of assistants. Good social skills are important to work and live amongst a group of international colleagues with different cultural backgrounds.

The successful candidate is fluent in English, conversational in French, and has previous experience in field research and team management.

Salary/funding:
The candidate will be supported initially by a MPI EVA contract. We will help the successful candidate to write a competitive research proposal to apply for full funding (salary and research money) on PhD or post-doc level.

Term of Appointment:
October 2018

Application Deadline:
June 1, 2018

Comments:
Starting October 2018, or as soon as possible afterwards, the successful candidate might move first for a pilot phase to Tai. Depending on funding, the anticipated duration of the position will be 3-4 years.

Applications include a cover letter stating research experience, field experience, a detailed curriculum vitae, a short research proposal (2 pages) and the names and e-mail addresses of three referees. The application documents should be sent electronically to taichimpproject@eva.mpg.de. The evaluation of applications will start on June 1, 2018, and applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
