We are offering a research position (PhD or post-doc level) working on questions of communication in wild chimpanzees. The position will start in October 2018, and will potentially take two 9 months field seasons for data collection at the Taï Chimpanzee Project, Cote d?Ivoire (

Our general interest is to understand the communication between different sub-groups (parties) of chimpanzees of the same community. We are interested to investigate the cognitive and emotional underpinnings of communication, using behavioural observations, recordings of calls and playback experiments. We will accept proposals on any question in the realm of sociality and communication.

MSc (or comparable degree) in Biology, evolutionary Anthropology or evolutionary Psychology. Good knowledge in evolutionary biology, animal behavior and ecology are crucial for a successful application. Previous observations, detailed behavioural data collection, and experience with playback experiments on wild mammals are of advantage. The candidate will need to work independently in a remote and physically demanding tropical forest habitat and will be expected to manage a small team of assistants. Good social skills are important to work and live amongst a group of international colleagues with different cultural backgrounds.

The successful candidate is fluent in English, conversational in French, and has previous experience with field experiments and research, as well as team management.

The candidate will be supported initially by a MPI EVA contract. We will help the successful candidate to write a competitive research proposal to apply for full funding (salary and research money) on PhD or post-doc level.
