RESEARCH ASSISTANT FOR HABITUATION AT THE TAÏ CHIMPANZEE PROJECT (CÔTE D?IVOIRE)

Position Description:
We are offering 1 research assistant position to continue the habituation of a new chimpanzee community for the Taï Chimpanzee Project in Côte d?Ivoire (www.taichimps.org), starting October 2018 (for 12 months).

The volunteer will be following a chimpanzee community that we have started to habituate in September 2014 to human observers. The volunteer will be responsible to manage a team of 4 local field assistants and is supervised by the TCP project manager. We will provide an initial training on the habituation technique, GPS and data collection methods used. The volunteer and his / her team will be camping in tents using a temporary campsite in the National Park. In addition, at the end of the tenure the volunteers will be responsible to train his / her replacement.

Working as a research assistant is hard work, but it will provide you with skill set necessary for future research with wild animals. This work will provide you with team management skills, detailed behavioural observation skills, experience in living in a remote area in tropical Africa and integrating into an international group of scholars and local workers.

Qualifications/Experience:
The successful applicant will need to work independently in a remote and physically demanding habitat. Good social skills are needed to work and life amongst a group of local field assistants. The applicant needs to speak French and good English skills will be of advantage. Previous experiences on observing animals in remote field sites and team management will be beneficial.

Salary/funding:
Research Assistants receive 200 ? per month to cover their expenses.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
We provide accommodation at the field site as well as permits to work in the Taï National Park. One airfare (Germany ? Côte d?Ivoire ? Germany, at a reasonable max.) will be reimbursed after completed tenure. Current living costs are about 120? per month, which research assistants have to provide themselves together with suitable clothing, health insurance and vaccinations.
