Volunteer Research Assistant - Samango Monkey Project in Malawi

Position Description:
LWT is looking for 1-2 volunteers for a Samango / Blue Monkey (Cercopithecus mitis) Research Project in Malawi. The volunteer will work the the Field Research Assistant carrying out the fieldwork for this project. We are assessing the population distribution and genetics to identify subspecies, looking at effects of forest fragmentation and degradation. Fieldwork will take place at various forest sites across Malawi.

Volunteers will be involved in and gain valuable skills in
- Population census surveys (walking transects)
- Habitat assessments (vegetation plots)
- Learning about the surrounding plant and animal ecology
- Gaining field experience with an expert team
- Data entry and organization
- GIS mapping (using QGIS)
- Collecting genetic material using sticky hair traps
- Hair analysis techniques

The study sites you will be visiting depend on when you can join the project as they change monthly.

This is a unique fieldwork opportunity at truly beautiful sites across Malawi. Volunteers need to have

- a passion for fieldwork or primates
- physically fit (this project requires a great deal of walking in difficult terrain)
- ability to live remotely
- ability work in a small team (1-3 people)
- previous experience with fieldwork in Africa is preferred but not required

This is a volunteer position with no salary provided.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Volunteers will be required to pay during their time with LWT to support travel, meals, and accommodation.

Term of Appointment:
This project is ongoing from April - October. Volunteers are required to join for at least 2 weeks, with 4+ weeks preferable.
