Gorilla Ecovolunteers needed in remote Gabon, central Africa

Hiring Organization:
Projet Gorille Fernan-Vaz / Fernan-Vaz Gorilla Project

Date Posted:

Position Description:
A volunteer at the FVGP will have several opportunities to make a difference and contribute to great ape conservation by becoming directly involved in any one of our field activities in Gabon, central Africa. The project offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy a remote, pristine forest of central Africa in a safe environment whether it's for a 1-week or a 3-month stay.

The Fernan-Vaz Gorilla Project (FVGP) is a PASA-accredited non-governmental Gabonese organization. The FVGP consists of a Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Center for western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) who have been legally confiscated from the bushmeat and pet trades by wildlife authorities in Gabon. The project is located in the Fernan-Vaz lagoon near the town of Omboué, just north of Loango National Park.

The Sanctuary consists of two naturally-forested enclosures for gorillas who cannot be considered for reintroduction back into the wild. They instead act as conservation ambassadors to help us raise awareness on the importance of conserving threatened wildlife and preserving their (our) natural habitat.

The Rehabilitation Center was strategically developed to minimize human exposure of younger gorillas currently living freely on an Oriquet Island in order to maintain their reintroduction potential. We are working hard to reintroduce them back into the wild and efforts are currently on-going.

The FVGP conservation base camp is located at Ompando which is located on mainland, just across Oriquet Island. It is embedded within pristine coastal primary forest where wild chimpanzees and gorillas are commonly heard. We are currently working on better protecting these wild populations while working with local communities to improve their own daily livelihoods.

-More than 21 years of age
-Speak French, English or Spanish
-Be highly motivated and optimistic
-Be highly adaptable to living in a remote location with basic living conditions
