EcoTourism and Volunteer Coordinator

Hiring Organization:
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Date Posted:
2018-02-09

Position Description:
About the Sanctuary: Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (TCS) was founded in 1995 by Mr. Bala Amarasekaran together with the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL), whom allotted 40 hectares of land to be used inside the recently upgraded Western Area Peninsula National Park (WAPNP). As of 2018, the sanctuary cares for 79 chimpanzees and unfortunately, each year more orphan chimpanzees continue to arrive at Tacugama. Everything we do starts with the chimps and transitions into wildlife conservation, research, environmental protection, advocacy, law enforcement, community preservation, education and ecotourism development initiatives. We also actively raise local and international awareness to promote change and address dire issues before it?s too late. As a result, Tacugama has emerged as a globally recognized conservation model.

TCS is located 25 minutes from Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, in West Africa.

Some of our priority projects that you will be coordinating:

Jaibui Conservation and Ecotourism Program:

We are currently collaborating with at least 7 communities in the Lower Kambama area to design and offer a unique eco-tourism venture on the Island of Jaibui in the Pujehun District. The area in itself is rich in biodiversity and home to the western chimpanzee and the elusive pygmy hippo. The project has been underway since October of last year and includes components of Community Engagement, Baseline Studies, Livelihood Support and of course Ecotourism Development. We have already built a research/housing facility, signed an MOU with the local communities and delivered livelihood support. We are ready to start implementing the next phase of our project - which includes setting up eco-lodges, capacity-building, hosting activities and providing energy requirements.

Developing Ecotourism at the Sanctuary :

As TripAdvisor?s #1 ranked destination in Sierra Leone, proceeds from the ecolodges are used to support TCS? operational costs, conservation efforts, community outreach and education programs. We also organize different events, such as Yoga Retreats (twice monthly), Birds & Butterflies tours (now available Monday to Saturday), Story Night, Special Dinners and Live Music Performances. Opportunities for growth and development are endless, and you can play a central part in taking our Ecotourism venture to the next level.

Growing TCS Volunteer Program:

Time is running out for endangered species and wildlife in general. We need all the support we can get! An integrated approach to wildlife, land management and sustainable development is the most important area where Tacugama can contribute to secure the future of chimpanzees and wildlife in Sierra Leone. Our success is built upon the dedication and commitment of individuals keen on making a difference. With your help, we can certainly encourage more individuals to lend their time to TCS and in the process institute change.
