Animal Caretaker

Position Description:
As an Animal Caretaker, you are responsible for the daily care of exotic mammals and small primates. In practice your work will largely include cleaning, feeding, doing observations, providing behavioural enrichment and assisting in the rehabilitation of the animals. You will be working in a small team of experienced caretakers according to standard (safety) procedures, protocols and a hands-off protocol. You will be giving directions and guidance to a number of trainees and (foreign) volunteers. The team is self-directing and we therefore expect you to be a good team player as well as being able to work independently. You are hierarchically managed by the team leader of the department. You are independent enough to take charge of the department in absence of your team leader.

Qualifications/Experience:
Affinity with the goals of AAP * minimum MBO level 3 (NLQF3 / EQF 3) * proven work experience with exotic mammals in a zoo, rescue centre or similar work environment * knowledge of primates is a plus * good physical condition and ability to work under stress * prepared to work weekends and public holidays * capable of working independently as well as a team player * taking initiative * disciplined to work with protocols * prepared to share knowledge and information * competent in both spoken and written English * capable of working with relevant computer software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).

Salary/funding:
We are offering you a temporary position of 12 months with the possibility of extension. It is a very challenging job with a lot of responsibility in an open, professional and international organisation with animals and people at its heart, located in a green environment. The salary ranges between ? 1.515,- and ? 1.832,- gross per month (based on 32 hrs) depending on relevant work experience.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Travel allowance.
