This is an associate level position, and works both independently and under supervision. This position may occasionally provide training. Behavioral associate performs various duties to facilitate and support the work and research of the veterinarians, study directors, and clients by completing a variety of animal behavior activities in the areas of enrichment, socialization, and behavioral assessments. As a team, the behavioral staff is responsible for the treatment of all on-site behavioral abnormalities present in animals and for the fulfillment of the preventive program.


* Documents compliance with environmental enhancement Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
* Assists with training of staff on enrichment, behavioral, and socialization SOPs.
* Prepares, distributes, and maintains enrichment items for animals housed at SNBL USA.
* Attend departmental meetings in when department management is unable to attend.
* Performs behavioral assessments for animals exhibiting abnormal behaviors during study procedures and ensures follow through of recommended treatments.
* Determines suitable social partners and performs animal socializations (i.e. pairs or groups), and completes related documentation.
* Assists with colony data (paper and electronic) as per USDA requirements and SNBL USA policies.
* Attends and participates in company and client meetings
* Assist in the management of assigning department tasks
* Maintain inventory of enrichment items and notify management of ordering needs.
* Performs behavioral observations/assessments, both of individual animals and groups, when necessary and/or requested.
* Provides behavioral treatments to animals that are on behavioral monitoring due to any abnormal behaviors exhibited.
* Provides operant conditioning training to animals when necessary and/or requested.
* Aids in the management of environmental enrichment data.
* Assists with developing, reviewing and revising environmental enhancement, behavioral assessment, and socialization SOPs and forms.
* Assists with developing and evaluating new enrichment items or methods for implementation at SNBL USA.
* Assists in the standardization of departmental processes and in the development of best practices.
* Scheduling and performance of study based behavioral assessments


* Associate Degree Preferred
* Previous experience with nonhuman primates is preferred. Previous experience working in animal research is preferred.
* AALAS Certification at the ALAT level preferred
* Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with a wide variety of personnel
* Intermediate computer skills
* Wears appropriate PPE in accordance with policies and procedures. PPE may include, but is not limited to: N-95 respirator, face mask, safety glasses, goggles, face shield, gloves, lab coat, scrubs, shoe covers, hair bouffant, and arm protectors.
* Ability to work overtime, weekend and evening hours, as needed.
