The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is one of seven federally supported National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. WNPRC's mission is to increase the understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human health and quality of life through research. To accomplish this, the WNPRC helps discover treatments, preventions and cures for human disease; generates new knowledge of primate biology, from the molecular and whole animal levels to the understanding of primate ecosystems; facilitates research progress by providing expertise, resources and training to scientists worldwide; and collects primate information and disseminates to the research community and to the public. A position is available with the Genetics Services Unit at the WNPRC, under the direction of Dr. David O'Connor. The successful candidate will actively participate in a team studying the genomics and immune system genetics of nonhuman primates, including whole genome and whole exome analysis, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genotyping, killer immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) genotyping, and Fc gamma receptor genotyping.

Principal duties:
Responsibilities include: plan, organize, and manage fee-for-service projects for University of Wisconsin scientists and external investigators; perform and supervise individuals performing molecular biological assays, including nucleic acid isolations, cDNA synthesis, PCR, and high-throughput sequencing using platforms such as the Illumina MiSeq and the PacBio Sequel; and develop and implement new assay. The successful candidate will also be responsible for analysis of large data sets, such as MHC genotyping results and whole genome/whole exome sequencing results, including variant analysis and data reporting. Demonstrated ability with large data set analysis and high throughput computing is strongly preferred, as is familiarity with command-line operations and Python programming.

The clients assisted by the Genetics Services Unit represent a diverse array of specialties, including transplantation research, pathogen and vaccine research, pharmaceutical research, and nonhuman primate colony management. The successful applicant will be responsible for interacting with these clients, from answering questions about the assays performed by Genetics Services to delivering results and assisting with any questions about the data. This individual must also ensure prompt and accurate sample handling and data flow from receipt of samples through delivery of results to the client. The successful candidate will be expected to prepare presentations for and participate in scientific conferences, promote Genetics Services to new clients, identify research problems, and assist in grant preparation and author peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Degree and area of specialization:
PhD required, with PhD-level experience studying genetics or genomics. Expertise in deep sequencing and computational data analysis is required.

The successful applicant will be trained to work in a BSL-2 laboratory.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Excellent communication and computer skills required. Experience studying human and/or nonhuman primate genomics and immune system genetics preferred. Strong molecular biology and bioinformatics skills (particularly with Python) preferred. Familiarity with project management and personnel management experience preferred. Demonstrative track record of productivity as evidenced by lead authorships in peer-reviewed scientific journals preferred.
