Primary Function
Provide medical care for chimpanzees under Attending Veterinarian's supervision and direction.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Assist veterinarian with physical exams, treatments and procedures, including collection of samples.
* Observe chimpanzees for detection of symptoms associated with disease.
* Dispense medication to chimpanzees under direction of veterinarian.
* Order and stock veterinary supplies and maintain cleanliness of vet clinics.
* Autoclave surgical instruments, prepare for surgery.
* Assist with maintenance of chimpanzee medical records as requested.
* Maintain medical equipment.
* Assist veterinarian or senior staff with sedation and recovery of chimpanzees.
* Coordinate laboratory tests and shipment.
* Work with Positive Reinforcement Training Coordinator to train chimpanzees to cooperate during medical procedures.
* Administer anesthesia to animals and monitor their responses.
* Assist during surgery, including operation of equipment and may sedate and recover chimpanzees.
* Prepare tissue samples for examination.
* Assist with evaluation of data related to clinical cases. May assist with preparation of data for publication, presentation, or grants.
* Train animal care staff on veterinary techniques and procedures and may train and lead volunteers.
* Act as Team Lead to Veterinary Technicians.

Qualifications/Experience:
Education and Experience Required
Entry Level: Associate's degree in related field required. Veterinary Technical degree preferred. Three years veterinary technician experience required. Aptitude for providing veterinary care to chimpanzees required.

Mid-Level: Veterinary technical degree required. Must have passed Veterinary Technician National Examination or be certified through American Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences. Five years veterinary technician experience required and two years' experience working with non-human primates. One year experience working with chimpanzees preferred. A combination of education and/or experience may be considered.

Max Level: Bachelor's degree in veterinary technology required. Must have passed Veterinary Technician National Examination or be certified through American Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences. Ten years' veterinary technician experience required. Six years' experience working with non-human primates required. Three years' experience working with chimpanzees required. A combination of education and/or experience may be considered.

Salary/funding:
Dependent on experience

Term of Appointment:
permanent, full-time position
