Position Description:
We are seeking two research assistants for an ongoing long-term project at the Ekongo field site near Salonga NP, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The goal of the project is to habituate one bonobo community to the presence of human observers. The project is in an early stage and encounters with bonobos and behavioral observations are still rare. Field work includes searches for bonobos, their nest sites and feeding remains. In addition, candidates will conduct a mammal survey using camera traps. Although a network of marked forest trails has been established, candidates must be able to navigate through a dense forest habitat using GPS devices, maps and other tools. Candidates will be trained by experienced field staff and will use a detailed protocol that has been employed during the initial phase of habituation. The Ekongo field site is in a very remote area and can only be accessed with charter planes and a 25 km forest hike. There is no electricity or tab water. Information about the field site and research activities is available at www.eva.mpg.de/primat and www.bonobo-alive.org
