Position Description:
Established on the islands of the River Gambia National Park (RGNP) in 1979, the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project (CRP) is one of the longest running chimpanzee rehabilitation sanctuaries in Africa. The three main islands in the park are home to over 100 chimpanzees and a diverse ecosystem of plants and wildlife species, including four other primate species.

Operating under the auspices of the Government of The Gambia, CRP is funded by external donors with additional revenue generated through eco-tourism. The management of the project consists of five primary components:

1) Chimpanzee Care and Protection
2) Research
3) Environmental Education
4) Ecotourism
5) Community Development and Outreach

The CRP is currently recruiting a new Program Manager. The Program Manager is based at the RGNP and responsible for the general management of the camp and sanctuary. He/she plays a pivotal role in overseeing, directing and coordinating activities under each project component listed above, along with the daily management of all field staff. The manager is additionally responsible for procuring project materials and administrative work in the capital every month. The position reports to the director.

Minimum of undergraduate degree in natural sciences, veterinary care, primatology or a related field with relevant work experience in developing country (master's degree preferred)

At least one year experience in wildlife conservation / rehabilitation, sanctuary management, education or related field

Ability to act independently to identify and analyze problems and recommend cost-effective solutions

At least on year of experience managing large national staffs from rural areas

Excellent networking and negotiation skills; credibility and confidence in dealing with many stakeholders

Ability to work in an environment with minimal comforts (unstable phone network, no wi-fi, limited solar power, remote location)

Willingness to work hours outside of normal workday including evenings, weekends and holidays

This is an unaccompanied, semi-volunteer position.
Salary is $1,000 monthly paid in local currency. Gambian income tax deductions paid for by project.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
The position is based at the project camp (currently a 4 1/2 - 5 hour drive from the capital) where comfortable on-site housing and basic food is provided. Travel to the capital for provisioning is part of the job description with accommodation (but not food) provided there. Work related transportation provided by the project.

Least expensive round trip airfare, from point of origin, will be reimbursed on completion of 12 months of contract.

On renewal of a second contract term of 12 months, one month?s paid leave is provided.

Health insurance, computer and smart phone required.

Term of Appointment:
Minimum of 12 months (renewable). Preference is given to those willing to make a commitment of 2 years or longer. Position has a 3-month trial period.
