Primate Integration Intern

Position Description:
This position observes primate behavior and involves integrating monkeys into social groups within a GFAS and PASA accredited sanctuary. Our internships are aimed at individuals hoping to gain experience in a specific area of sanctuary life.

Monitoring the health of the monkeys that you are integrating
Identifying the individual monkeys both within troops and introduction cages
Working with the local staff and volunteers to check all monkeys have adequate amounts of food and water, cages are clean, doors secure, ropes are secure and functioning. See that all their needs are met.
Observations of behavior of monkeys to collect data for troop integrations.
Writing weekly summaries and keeping the Animal Manager and Integration Staff informed of progress.
Recording observations in a clear and concise manner
Sharing your knowledge with other volunteers and being friendly towards them
Attending volunteer meetings on Wednesday evenings and participate where necessary
Attend committee meetings and participate where necessary.
Fundraising projects are an essential ongoing need of the foundation and we expect interns to participate regularly to help with funding.
Take on other responsibilities to help the centre with funding and progression for the monkeys and the volunteers.

All training will be given on-site and as an intern, you will have staff supervision

Supervisory skills
Work on own initiative as well as in a team
Perform all tasks in the best interest of the foundation, monkeys and the volunteers.
Strong interest in wildlife conservation
Able to work in a hot climate at times
Able to work with people of different personalities and backgrounds
Able to live and volunteer in the same community of people with changeable dynamics
Trust, honesty and respect towards all members of the team
Patient and friendly towards volunteers
Fluent English speaking

Qualifications / Experience:
Min 4 A-C grade GCSE?s with further education or equivalent
Experience in supervising people (preferred but not essential)
Previous volunteer experience / experience with animals
Suitable animal / primate qualification (preferred)
Experience in a working environment for a min of 2 years

Interns pay a reduced fee to cover room and board expenses while onsite.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Accommodation, laundry and all vegan meals will be provided.

Term of Appointment:
6-12 months

The sanctuary promotes a vegan lifestyle and is approximately one hour from Kruger National Park in the Limpopo province. There are also opportunities to visit Blyde River Canyon and other local nature attractions.
