Short and Long term Volunteer at the Limbe Wildlife Centre

Hiring Organization:
Pandrillus Foundation

Date Posted:

Position Description:
The Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC) is a conservation education centre in Limbe, Cameroon. The centre is managed by the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife (MINFOF) and the Pandrillus Foundation, a US non-profit NGO also registered in Nigeria and Cameroon. Our aims are to:

1. Rescue, rehabilitate and release wildlife rescued from the illegal bush meat and pet trades, and ensure high quality animal husbandry standards and veterinary care for all animals.
2. Help secure the long term survival of threatened and endangered species native to Cameroon through conservation education and alternative employment programmes to hunting for the local community.
3. Work with law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal bush meat and wildlife trade

As a volunteer at Limbe Wildlife Centre, you will play an active role in conservation by assisting in the care of the approximately 300 animals who have been orphaned by the bushmeat trade. Volunteers take part in the day to day activities of the sanctuary, including cleaning cages, preparing food and feeding animals, creating enrichment and doing daily observations.

Depending on the time and current activities, you may also be able to have the opportunity to observe surgeries in our veterinary clinic, assist in an education lesson in local schools or work on your own project depending of your skills.

Currently Limbe Wildlife Centre cares for Western Lowland Gorillas, Central and Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzees, drills, mandrills, baboons, several species of guenons and mangabeys, as well as various non-primates.

We are always looking for dedicated, hard-working volunteers to improve the lives of the animals under our care!

For all positions we request a copy of your CV, as well as two recommendation letters.

For short term volunteers (1 week to 3 months) no previous experience with animals is needed.

For long term volunteers (at least 6 month) experience with wildlife is recommended but not essential. There is an interview before the final decision.

For short term volunteers: a donation of 250 euro/week covers lodging, house security, cleaning and lunch on work days. All of the funds raised by the volunteer programme go directly towards supporting the animals under our care and to pay for volunteer costs (housing, etc.).

For more information about the long term volunteer costs, please contact us by email.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Volunteers are provided with accommodation in our volunteer house, which has basic rooms and shared bathrooms and a kitchen. Lunch is provided on working days.
We welcome volunteers for a minimum stay of 1 week. Other arrangements may be made by request.
