Study of human-macaque conflict dynamics in Malaysia

Position Description:
The McCowan and Bliss-Moreau Laboratories at the University of California (Davis) are looking to hire a research assistant to help collect data on human-macaque conflict and interactions in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This field assistant will be responsible for collecting data related to the human presence in the research area and human interactions with monkeys. Data collection will include conducting interviews with members of local human communities to gather information on their experiences with and attitudes toward monkeys. Term of employment will be approximately 12 months. Candidates may have the opportunity to develop their own project for a university or graduate school thesis using the data collected as part of the main project.

Qualifications/Experience:
The ideal candidate should:
- Have a background (either at Bachelors or Masters level) in psychology, political science, sociology, anthropology or other related field.
- Be comfortable approaching and speaking with new people.
- Be mentally and physically fit and able to work outdoors for long days in the field in a challenging environment.
- Be adaptable and able to work both as part of a team and individually.
- Be reliable, patient, enthusiastic and committed to scientific research.
- Have experience conducting interviews.

***Fluency in English AND either Malay or Indonesian is required.***

Salary/funding:
A salary based on local standards will be provided to cover living costs. The field assistant will be responsible for their own ground or air travel to the field site, medical/travel insurance, and visa (if necessary).

Term of Appointment:
~ 12 months
