Postdoc and PhD positions on fission-fusion dynamics

Hiring Organization:
Instituto Politecnico Nacional

Date Posted:
2014-02-05

Position Description:
We are searching for one postdoc and one or two PhD students to join a research project on socioecology of fission-fusion in social animals.

The project is aimed at understanding the social and ecological factors influencing grouping patterns in different animal species which show a high variation in group size, cohesion and composition. My research team tackles this question empirically, through observations of spider monkeys in natural conditions in Punta Laguna, Yucatan and theoretically, through building agent-based models which test hypotheses and generate new predictions to be tested with new field data. This research includes collaborations with other primatologists like Filippo Aureli and Colleen Schaffner, as well as with physicists like Denis Boyer.

Interested candidates should send an updated CV and statement of interest to Gabriel Ramos-Fernández.

Qualifications/Experience:
Postdoctoral researchers should have experience conducting independent research which includes fieldwork under difficult conditions and/or modelling of biological systems. Ideally, the research project should include both aspects.

PhD candidates should have a strong background in biology, psychology, anthropology or a related field. They should have a strong interest in becoming independent researchers and good abilities for conducting fieldwork and skills for analyzing data and developing models.

Working knowledge of Spanish is desirable for postdoc position, necessary for PhD students.

Salary/funding:
The postdoctoral stay will be for at least one year and will be supported by the CONACYT project with the same name. The PhD students will enter the program on science on conservation and use of natural resources at CIIDIR Unidad Oaxaca, Instituto Politecnico Nacional. The program has full CONACYT scholarships for all registered students

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
No support offered for international travel. Local travel is supported by grant.
