Position Description:
The veterinarian will be responsible for the mental and physical well-being of all the monkeys at the sanctuary, as well as dogs and birds. He or she will work closely with the Executive Director and Caregivers to monitor all animals and ensure that they are happy and healthy. Jungle Friends specializes in monkeys with special needs, including diabetes, blindness, amputations and metabolic bone disease. Many of the monkeys are elderly, and a number of the monkeys of all ages exhibit self-injurious behavior. We embrace the hospice philosophy, and perform euthanasia only in extreme cases.

Jungle Friends incorporates holistic and homeopathic medicine into our medical routine.

Duties include:

Develop and implement care plans for animals with acute and /or chronic conditions.
Supervise the administration of daily medications and preventative measures.
Assisted by Caregivers and Veterinary Technician, keep detailed notes and maintain clinical files of all animals.
Observe and monitor behavioral changes and other indicators of stress that may put the monkeysâ health at risk.
Assess and treat injuries using appropriate capture and restraint methodologies.
Perform medical procedures, including surgeries as needed.

Qualifications/Experience:
Must have a DVM from an accredited college of veterinary medicine, and be licensed to practice in Florida.
Experience working with primates preferred.
Dedicated, hardworking individual who is willing to commit to at least one year.
Experience with holistic/homeopathic veterinary medicine is a plus.
Due to insurance and health considerations, we do not accept applicants who smoke.
We also ask that you are (or are willing to become) a vegetarian while you are on the property. Communal meals are vegetarian/vegan. You cannot store, cook or consume animal products at Jungle Friends.

Salary/funding:
Starting at $60,000 per year. If you have never interned/volunteered at Jungle Friends, we require a 4-month probation period to properly train you for the position.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
If you would like to live on-site and there is space available, we will talk to you about the cost of room and board, approximately $800 a month.
