Voluntary Field Assistant

Position Description:
A voluntary field assistant is required for a project investigating social learning within the context of foraging, in semi-wild chimpanzees at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, Zambia. The project is investigating the role of the entire social group on the acquisition of new foraging behaviours. Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage has four large groups of naturally living chimpanzees and the project will be focussing on two of these.

Responsibilities include identifying the individual chimpanzees, data collection of various social behaviours, collecting individual focal data, video recording the chimpanzees and entering data into electronic form.

The accommodation is equipped with showers, kitchen facilities, electricity and basic internet. This will be an excellent opportunity for someone looking to gain field experience.

Applicants should have a background in psychology, zoology, biology, animal behaviour or a related field. They should also have an interest in primate behaviour. Experience with animal data collection is preferred but not essential. Applicants should be open minded, independent and willing to adapt to a foreign culture, and also be prepared to work potentially long days at the sanctuary.

They should also be reliable, responsible and willing to work as part of a small team.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Applicants will be responsible for paying for their own flights to N’Dola, insurance, travel, vaccinations (if necessary), food, and lodgings costs ($30 per day). Research equipment will be provided.

Data collection will begin on the 15th July 2013 and end on the 5th September 2013. The position will start on the 15th July and candidates will be required to stay at least one month and ideally for the whole period.
