Position Description:
The major responsibility for this position will be to coordinate animal care activities, cage allocation, and building assignments associated with research and veterinary care activities.
Duties and responsibilities include:
•Properly execute all Texas Biomed animal capture plans, adverse weather plans and other disaster plans.
•Will be responsible for the care and preventive maintenance of assigned equipment and the stocking of supplies necessary for the operation of the animal resources segment of the research program.
•Oversee the coordination and training of animal care personnel and provide cross training in order to ensure greater flexibility of animal care staff.
•Consult with investigators and/or veterinarians and make recommendations concerning methodology and animal care procedures to be followed in a research program or a segment thereof.
•Will be responsible for organization and administration of proper housing for all species. Specifically to ensure that all adequate caging is available to be in compliance with AAALAC standards and pertinent federal regulatory requirements.
•Will write and review SOP’s, develop animal care and use procedures and programs.
•Assist with design, construction and renovation of animal facilities.
•Recommend employee selection, transfer, promotion and termination.
•Monitor performance of employees and conduct periodic performance evaluations.
•Provide counseling and disciplinary action when necessary.
•Participate in on-site IACUC, AAALAC and USDA inspections and the subsequent coordination of corrective actions.
•Audit husbandry and animal care data.
•Coordinate and train supervisory personnel in all procedures such as management/human resources procedures, animal husbandry and facility maintenance.
•Prescribe husbandry and animal care program duties such as monitoring, sampling and observing laboratory animals.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
•Will report directly to the Attending Veterinarian/Departmental Associate Director.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS: This work may involve strenuous physical activities, exposure to hazardous substances, unpleasant work conditions such as exposure to animals, unpleasant odors or adverse weather conditions. Potential exposure to infectious agents such as herpes B virus, SIV, HIV, STLV, Vaccinia, TB, Shigella, and zoonotic diseases. Potential exposure to radioactive materials, toxic chemicals, caustic
and acid cleaning and sterilizing compounds. Potential exists for animal bites and animal scratches. Must routinely lift 50 pounds and carry for short distances without assistance. Employee will drive Texas Biomed vehicles on Texas Biomed business. Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required. Immunization for hepatitis B is required unless waived by the employee. Safety training and protective clothing, equipment, and supplies will be provided to the employee.
OTHER: This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position. Texas Biomed’s business hours are Monday through Friday - 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Texas Biomedical is committed to a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug screen is required.

Qualifications/Experience:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, animal science, animal husbandry or closely related field. Ten or more years of job specific experience, working with NHP and other research animals. Certification as an AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist is required. Must have a valid Texas Driver’s license and meet Texas Biomed’s driving standards. As a manager, this position requires the knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources. Requires the ability to interact with others in a team setting and communicate effectively, with independent judgment and diplomacy. Must operate personal computer with Microsoft software.
