Macaque Cognition Research Assistant

Position Description:
The Macaque Study Centre is a new facility for cognitive and behavioural research with crested macaques (Macaca nigra) at Marwell Wildlife (Winchester, UK), run by Dr. Bridget Waller (University of Portsmouth, UK). The macaques are trained to participate in cognitive tasks (while housed in their social group at the zoological park) and are currently training on touchscreens. We are running a series of experiments investigating their understanding of social signals, such as facial expressions (see link for a video of the facility):

We welcome applications from volunteers who would like to gain experience of training and testing primates for cognitive research. You will need to undergo a training and induction process (approx 4 weeks) before working with the macaques, so we ask for a minimum of 3 months commitment.

Qualifications/Experience:
Essential: Undergraduate degree in Biology/Psychology/Ethology or related discipline, and evidence of scientific interest in primates. Ability to work alone and also as part of a large team (including academics, students, zoo staff and zoo keepers), and good interpersonal skills.

Desirable: Postgraduate degree (Masters) in Biology/Psychology/Ethology with a focus on animals/primates, and experience working with animals (observational and/or experimental)

Other: A full driving license (and use of own car) would be useful
