Field worker/research assistant position for chimpanzee research in Nimba Mountains, Guinea, West Africa

Position Description:
The research assistant will be part of an on-going chimpanzee research project at the Seringbara study site in the Nimba Mountains. Duties include data collection on chimpanzee socio-ecology (e.g. phenology transects, diet, ranging, nest-building) and tool use. In addition, efforts focus on habituation of a community of chimpanzees. Research assistants will be responsible for organizing and supervising a team of local field assistants and for organizing camp supplies.

Qualifications/Experience:
Interest in chimpanzee behaviour, ecology and conservation. Physically fit and willing to work in very tough mountainous terrain. Independent and mentally strong. Willingness to live in very basic conditions in a remote field camp. Ability to speak (basic) French and experience of living and working in Africa would be hugely beneficial.

Salary/funding:
This is a volunteer position and no stipend can be offered. The successful candidate will be expected to cover his/her flight and visa, as well as all other costs related to travel (i.e. hotel, insurance, vaccinations, etc.) and should bring personal items required for living and working in the forest.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Housing and food at the field site are provided free of charge. All travel in Guinea is covered. Necessary equipment for working in the forest (cameras, GPS etc.), and the presence of experienced local guides is arranged by the project.

Term of Appointment:
This position is for a minimum of 12 months. Position is available from mid Oct 2013
