Primate Behavior & Ecology Courses

La Suerte and Ometepe Biological Field Station is offering various courses to provide the oportunity to study primates in the Nicaraguan and Costa Rican rainforests.

When? There are various sessions during the summer: May 25-June 19 (La Suerte and Ometepe $1600), June 22-July 17 (Ometepe $1600), and July 20-August 14 (La Suerte and Ometepe $1600), June 22-July 17 (Advanced priamtes (La Suerte $1600)
Winter:Dec 27 to Jan 18th (Ometepe and La Suerte $1500) *The prices include station program fee, three meals a day, room and board, and scheduled tramsportation to & from the Airport vicinity. They do not, however, include airfare or credit costs at your institution.

The classes are comprehensive 26-day sessions which include lectures, hikes, field techniques, and individual research projects.
This course explores the behavioral ecology of non-human primates from
an evolutionary and comparative perspective, with emphasis given to the
species present at Ometepe or La Suerte. The main topics covered in this course
include field methods and research design. A background in animal
behavior or biological anthropology is helpful but not required. Each day will be a combination of lectures, seminars and fieldwork, with daily forest
exploration. Although the focus while in the field will be on primates
and their immediate environment, other flora and fauna of interest will
be pointed out and discussed as they are encountered. Advanced component to the course is available. Contact us for more information.

Nicaragua: Ometepe Biological Field Station is located on Ometepe, an island of 276 square kilometeres in Lake Nicaragua. Two majestic forested volcanoes dominate the island.

Costa Rica: La Suerte Biological Field station is a 750-acre ranch located in Northeastern Costa Rica near cariari. The ranch consists of 2 rivers, swamps, pastures, and primary/secondary tropical rain forest.

Enterance Qualifications:
Students of all levels welcome! Classes are in English for students with an interest in Primate Ecology.

For acceptance, students must comply with various required documents:

-Letter of Recommendation,
-Medical Form,
-Student Statement, and
-Release Waiver.

Support (scholarships, travel):
Airfare is not included in the course, fee. However, meals (3 a day) and lodging are included.
