Position Description:
Responsible for all activities required for supporting / maintaining animal colonies and relative procedures in relation to the clinical efforts of the NIAID Comparative Medicine Branch as directed to maintain the NIAID/DIR non-human primate colonies.

Manage the animal colonies through consultation with all parties involved on assigned special projects and clinical findings in conjunction with NIAID Animal Study Proposals.

Coordinate efforts as needed to set up pertinent procedures and schedules.

Possess the ability to perform technical duties associated with the NIAID Animal Study Proposals especially those in relation to NHP human respiratory and flavivirus studies to include but not limited to daily animal health checks, blood withdrawals, anesthesia, innoculations, tracheal and nasal lavages, documented observations and treatments.

Maintain detailed accurate record keeping for all experimental data and related information eg. ability to calculate maximum blood volume withdrawal based on body weight.

Practice universal precautions appropriate to different levels of ABSL. Work safely with animal / human pathogen biohazards, and help to maintain the research animal facility as a safe work environment / operation.

Schedule time in expectation for meetings with veterinary staff, outside the facility if necessary, to assist in coordinating animal research needs.

Serve as the main “point of contact” or “Liaison” for assigned NIAID Animal Study Proposals and related projects with facility technical staff.

Report any animal health, care, and / or well-being concerns to the appropriate facility management staff.

Report any facility infrastructure issues, relative to the animal care and support areas, to the appropriate facility management.

Ability to work flexible hours to ensure research needs and experiments are carried out to comply with appropriate timelines.

Ability to interact with all personnel in a manner which promotes a professional work environment.

Qualifications/Experience:
Must have experience in laboratory animal care and is required to have knowledge of non-human primate husbandry and technical procedures. Must have computer program proficiency such as MS Word / Access / Excel. Must have a proficient technical vocabulary. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or equivalent education / experience.
