Education Programme Coordinator

Position Description:
We are looking for an education coordinator to work along side the local coordinator and teachers for our Tacugama Kids Programme (TKP). The programme runs through the academic year, working with rural schools in the local area teaching class 5 (age 11-12). TKP provides environmental education for the whole of the academic year and aims to develop understanding of environmental and conservation issues.

The coordinator may also support ongoing staff education at the sanctuary.

Specific activities will include:
- Providing support to the local education coordinator
- Suggesting and implementing new ideas to improve the programme
- Helping improve the teaching skills and methods of the local teachers
- Creating ways to motivate both teachers and pupils and ensure that TKP is enjoyable and as well as educational
- Supporting the continuing education of sanctuary staff

Qualifications/Experience:
- Proven experience working in an educational setting with children
- An interest in teaching the subject of conservation and environmental awareness
- Ability to create and carry out new initiatives independently
- An understanding of key issues impacting primate conservation
- Previous experience living in developing countries and/or in an isolated setting with limited amenities

Salary/funding:

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Accomodation is provided at the sanctuary together with one local meal daily

Term of Appointment:
Volunteers must be available for a minimum period of three months

We are ideally looking for a volunteer who will be available by late December 2009.
