Pathology Technician - SNPRC

Position Description:
Working independently, within established guidelines, maintains, organizes, and coordinates activities for the pathology facility. Performs those duties appropriate to his or her technical specialization. Prepares the pathology room to include preparing correct paperwork, verifying animal information, preparing instruments, labeling cassettes and containers, and maintaining PPE and supply stock levels. Assists the pathologist in performing procedures and collection of tissue samples into cassettes, culture media, frozen media, etc. from all animal species. Logs information into computer and pathology log book and maintains records. Operates a digital camera for taking photos of lesions and downloads images into the computer. Operates surgical equipment. Coordinates with clinical staff and tissue share personnel. Cleans, sanitizes, and restocks pathology room. Assists as above in the BSL3 pathology room. Assists in the histology laboratory. May operate SFBR owned vehicle. Performs related duties as required. Individual will report to Histology Supervisor.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS: This work may involve potential exposure to radioactive materials or x-ray, carcinogens, toxic materials, hazardous chemicals, and infectious agents (HIV, Hepatitis B & C, Herpes B, BSL3-4 agents). This work will also involve working with Baboons, Chimpanzees, other non-human primates and non-primates. May operate SFBR owned vehicles. Will sit at computer for long periods of time. Must routinely lift 65 pounds and carry for short distances without assistance. Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required. Must be able to wear an air-purifying respirator in a proper manner and, if necessary, pass a respirator fitness test. Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided.
OTHER: This is a full-time hourly paid position. Foundation business hours are Mondays through Fridays – 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with some weekends/evenings/holidays.

Qualifications/Experience:
Required: Minimum education level high school diploma/GED with 4½ years of closely related work experience with demonstrated expertise in their technical field OR Associate's degree or minimum of 60 semester hours of college oriented towards science or certification at the technician level and 2 ½ years closely related experience. Knowledge of medical terminology, identification of anatomy, and computer knowledge. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and meet SFBR driving standards. Preferred: Five years experience with primates.
