Position Description:
Daily husbandry and technical duties with various lab animal species from rodents to nonhuman primates in biocontainment. Anesthetize, bleed and assist in necropsy of animals in biocontainment. Perform detailed health observations, CBC, chemistry tests. Provide assistance to veterinary staff, maintain records, etc. Other duties as assigned.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS: This work may involve potential exposure to x-ray equipment, biological hazards (infectious materials, BSL-2, BSL-3, BSL-4, medical waste). Will work with laboratory animals such as baboons, macaques, marmosets, rodents and other small mammals. Will drive a motor vehicle on SFBR business. Must routinely lift 50 pounds and carry for short distances without assistance. Other occupational hazards: animal bites, scratches, bending, lifting, wearing respirator or biosafety suit. Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required. Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided. Must be able to wear an air-purifying respirator in a proper manner and, if necessary, pass a respirator fitness test.
OTHER: This is a full-time hourly paid position. Duty hours will be Mondays through Fridays – 8:00a.m. – 5:00p.m., with some weekend/evening/holiday work as necessary.

Qualifications/Experience:
Required: Associate degree or a minimum of 60 college semester hours towards science OR high school diploma/GED with 2 ½ years of closely related work experience. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and meet SFBR driving standards. Two years related experience and have demonstrated expertise in technical field working with animals. Must be self-motivated, capable of working with a team of highly qualified individuals. Must pass extensive Dept. of Justice background check and be willing to work in biocontainment. Experience with Microsoft Office. Preferred: Two or more years working with laboratory animals such as rodents and nonhuman primates at BSL2 level or above. Experience working in biocontainment with laboratory animals.
