Position Description:
Duties include:
•daily observations of all animals for general appearance and well-being as well as observing stereotypical species-behavior patterns
•providing twice daily feed, water and enrichment as well as husbandry for all animals
•performing detailed observations on experimental animals adhering to specific research protocols.
•sedating, maintaining and recovering animals from anesthesia
•collecting, processing and analyzing blood from experimental animals
•collecting other study-specific biological samples from experimental animals
•collecting data and maintaining study notebooks in an organized fashion
•providing assistance to Veterinarians and all duties as prescribed by Veterinarians, ABSL3 Scientific Manager, ABSL3 Supervisor and co-workers
•following all safety guidelines and SOPs in place for the SNPRC & ABSL3, and all directives given by supervisors and senior staff and must work well as a part of a team.
•must be willing and able to attend all required safety briefings and training sessions
POTENTIAL HAZARDS: This work will involve potential exposure to radioactive materials and potentially infectious agents. This work will also involve working with laboratory animals such as macaques, marmosets, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits. Will drive a motor vehicle on SFBR business. Must have valid Texas driver’s license and meet SFBR driving standards. Must routinely lift 50 pounds (animals, equipment, feed, caging and supplies) and carry for short distances without assistance. Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required. Must be able to wear an air-purifying respirator in a proper manner and, if necessary, pass a respirator fitness test.
OTHER: This is a full-time hourly paid position. Foundation business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm. Weekend shifts will be required.

Qualifications/Experience:
Required: High school diploma or GED with 2 ½ years closely related experience working in the technical specialty involved (preferably at SFBR). Must be self motivated, well organized and have excellent communication skills. Must be familiar with the Computerized Animal Management Program (CAMP). Must pass extensive FBI and CDC background checks and obtain clearances. Preferred: Associate’s degree or 60 college semester hours oriented towards science or area of study closely related to position or completion of course of instruction leading to certification in the technical or health career field related to technical specialty (RVT or AALAS Certification). Extensive experience with daily observations and animal husbandry work. Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel and Word). Applicant must be able to follow directions as given by Veterinarian and supervisor and work closely with co-workers.
