Primate Sanctuary
Date Posted:
2009-04-02
Position Description:
I have recently completed an internship at a wildlife rescue center in central Ecuador where I worked with a wide variety of tropical mammals, birds, and reptiles. However, my main interest was working with the primates there and I would like to continue my work with primates in a sanctuary setting. I am preferably looking for a sanctuary that focuses on rehabilitation and possible release of primates if they seem fit to survive in the wild. Although I know many academic professional have little support for the release of captive animals back into the wild, I believe the least they deserve is a second chance at freedom. I think a sanctuary should serve only as a temporary home for the animals. I am not looking for a zoo!
Educational Background:
I have an undergraduate degree in wildlife ecology at the University of Wisconsin. My focus was on international conservation. I have a general knowledge of primate behavior and ecology as well as tropical ecology.
Qualifications/Experience:
I have experience handling and caring for capuchin monkeys, woolly monkeys, spider monkeys, and tamarins as well as a wide variety of other tropical animals. I am also pretty familiar in how a sanctuary needs to be run especially in a developing country where resources can e limited. I have a basic knowledge of Spanish and have experience working and traveling in Latin America. However, I am willing to work outside of Latin America and am very passionate about exploring other cultures and learning other languages.
