Volunteer field assistant for chacma baboon research in South Africa

Position Description:
Enthusiastic volunteers with training and/or experience in field biology are invited to assist with data collection during one of two fieldwork periods (January 2010 and/or March 2010 and the last week of the month preceding those mentioned). Fieldwork will see volunteers following the trail of a troop of free-living, wild-foraging chacma baboons through the hills of the Cape of Good Hope section of the Table Mountain National Park – a reserve located at the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula. While doing so, they will be expected to make detailed observations on the animals’ behavioural- and feeding ecology, and periodically record the location of the troop using a hand-held GPS unit.

Qualifications/Experience:
Experience and/or training in field biology, behavioural ecology and/or primatology.

None

Term of Appointment:
One or more 5 week period (1 week of training followed by 1 month of data collection) as outlined above

Application Deadline:
3 weeks prior to the beginning of each field work session

Comments:
Volunteers must be able to participate for a five week period and must be able to cover the costs of food and accommodation, and of transport not directly related to the project, for the duration of their stay.
