Position Description:
I am looking for an internship or job for May-August 2009 working on a behavioral research team. Field work is preferred but I also love working in labs and controlled settings. Depending on location housing and/or a stipend would be required for living arrangements. Long hours, harsh weather, rough terrain, tracking, radio telemetry, GIS input/analysis, and working closely in a self-motivated team is a plus. I have a lot of experience with many different mammals, reptiles, and birds and am looking to gain experience with primates.I look forward to working with you!
Educational Background:
Undergraduate at James Madison University, earning a B.S. in Biology- Ecology and Environmental Biology, in May 2010. Relevant Coursework: (including labs) in Genetics, Animal Behaviors, Mammalogy, Ornithology, to name a few of the upper level Biology courses as well as research assistant to two professors (Ornithology population survey and Evolution of Human Behaviors), and employed during school term in the Biology Department setting up the Microbiology Lab. Additional coursework taken in GIS (using the ESRI suite) and Statistical Analysis of Variants and Experimental Design.
Skills in the Microsoft Office Suite as well as Photoshop, and Camtasia. Can speak some Spanish and American Sign Language and am continuing education in both.
Qualifications/Experience:
Summer 2008 - GVI South Africa, Large Predator Behavioral Research team. Volunteered for two months as a member of the Karongwe research team collecting behavioral data on collared lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. Also collected data for an ongoing project researching the Elephant's feeding habits and the effect on the flora of the preservation. Received training in bush first aid, radio telemetry, GIS analysis, field tracking and identification, and multiple forms of data collection.
Summer 2007- Wildlife Education Preceptor, Wildlife Center of Virginia, Waynesboro, VA. Worked for three months as a wildlife educator at the WCV, traveling with live animals around Virginia to libraries and schools teaching children about native Virginia wildlife and what they can do to help the environment. Took care of education animals (eagles, hawks, falcons, opossums, snakes) and also assisted wildlife rehabilitators in general care of patients at the center including feeding, administering medication, and assisting veterinarians in daily check-ups. Received training in falconry (skills and training of birds), capturing and restraining wild animals, proper release procedures for wild animals, and first aid for reptile bites. Gained a lot of experience with public speaking and learned how to be both educating and entertaining for students of all ages.
