Regional Biocontainment Laboratory Support Services Manager

Position Description:
The University of Pittsburgh, Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR), is seeking a Support Services Manager for its newly constructed Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL). This position requires the integration of a broad knowledge base of veterinary management, research support, and animal husbandry management skills to provide oversight of the research support and husbandry functions of laboratory animals housed within the RBL. Responsibilities include the supervision of RBL Research Technician and Maintenance positions to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and maintain AAALAC accreditation of the facility. The Research Support Services Manager will be responsible for the daily management of personnel, supplies, equipment, and budgetary expenditures; ensure completion of staff training and development; and monitor human resource functions. In addition, the incumbent provides both direct and oversight management of RBL veterinary medical support and health surveillance operations under the guidance of the RBL Clinical Veterinary Director. This position communicates regularly with principal investigators and their staffs, and trains research personnel in the details of DLAR and RBL animal facility operations.

Qualifications/Experience:
Candidates should have a degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary technical program or Bachelor's degree and/or relevant work experience in animal science, plus five years of relevant experience, this must include at least three years of supervisory experience. LATG certification with CMAR eligibility or certification by AALAS is a plus. The incumbent must have strong written and verbal communication skills and be proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of products. Knowledge of research and animal facility practices within a biocontainment facility for a multi-species program is a critical consideration.
The incumbent must be capable of adequately performing all duties outlined while wearing respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment required to work in animal biosafety level 3 facilities. The incumbent must successfully fulfill a confidential medical screening to determine that he/she does not have a medical condition that may place the candidate at undue health risk by entering the RBL or that may create a medical contra-indication for any required vaccinations. The position requires successful enrollment in the University of Pittsburgh Animal Exposure Surveillance Program, Tuberculosis Protection Program, Measles Protection Program and other medical surveillance programs as dictated by the active research within the RBL. In addition, the candidate must successfully complete a Department of Justice security clearance for work with Select Agents and Toxins, as required by Federal regulation.
