Description of Work:

The NC Zoological Park seeks a General Curator to manage the Animal Management section. The Animal Management section is responsible for the care and management of approximately 1600 specimens. Care and management of the collection is provided by approximately 80 staff. The NC Zoo is a young and progressive organization in a rural setting in piedmont North Carolina. The General Curator leads all animal collection planning and implementation, including acquisition and disposition of animals. Directs development of collection management protocols and standard operating procedures including programs for animal husbandry, environmental enrichment, animal nutrition, and training. Collaborates with the Veterinary Services section to affect the delivery of preventative and clinical veterinary medicine. Guides staff management and development for a large staff of curators, supervisors and animal care givers. Participates in and often leads exhibit planning and capital improvements project management. Provides general management for field conservation and research programs.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Broad knowledge of Animal Husbandry; basic knowledge of national and international zoo world; clear understanding of priority of conservation issues nationally and internationally; proven record of team/people management; good oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of windows based computer programs.

Qualifications/Experience:
Training and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Husbandry or related curriculum and seven years of progressive experience in zoological work in Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoos, three of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

Salary/funding:
Hiring Range: $53,248 - $70,000
