Position Description:
Cambridge Scientific is seeking a Biological Lab Technician to work on-site with a nation-leading research facility located in Frederick, MD!

-Experience working with non-human primates (NHP) and AALAS certification preferred! Position will require some work with other animals such as mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. but NHP experience STRONGLY desired.
Duties:
-Must perform all work with viable select biological agents in a BSL-3 and/or BSL-4 biocontainment suite(s). These agents may include, but are not limited to, anthrax, plague, tularemia, Q fever, glanders, emerging threats, etc. This effort may require used of personal protective equipment, as appropriate.
-Must prepare and sterilize liquid bacteriological media for culture of select biological agents.
-Must inoculate with different bacterial strains, monitor the cultures microscopically for cell / spore production, and harvest and purify the cells / spores by centrifugation and washing in sterile distilled water, followed by centrifugation through a Hypaque density gradient, as appropriate.
-Participating in animal experimentation studies, which include bleeding for antisera and performing biopsies for tissues of interest. The antisera will be processed and stored properly until used. The tissues will be processed for cell culture, tissue sectioning or frozen until use.
-Must immunize experimental animals intramuscularly, subcutaneously, orally or patch with vaccines and vaccine candidates.
-Must parenterally challenge experimental animals with bacterial agents and note survival or death.
-Must participate in aerosol challenges of mice, guinea pigs, rabbits and nonhuman primate laboratory animals with bacterial agents.
-Must determine the viability of suspensions of bacterial cells and spores by plating onto nutrient agar media.
-Must comparatively analyze strains of select bacterial agents by modern molecular biology techniques, to include DNA/RNA preparation, PCR analysis, and microarray. Methodology to be employed includes agarose gel electrophoresis, endonuclease digestion, polymerase chain reaction, and other related procedures. Perform experiments to further characterize the bacterial strains to include SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, Western Blot analysis and enzyme-linked immunsorbant assay (ELISA) studies.
-Must work in close coordination with other government contractors and government employees in studies of select bacterial agents, which are refractory to vaccination.
-Maintaining laboratory records will be required in a neat and timely manner. The use of computer for ordering supplies, and processing, analyzing, and storing data will be required. Specific projects will utilize GLP requirements/documentation.
-Must participate in therapeutic experiments using antibiotics or other compounds and available for variable therapeutic dosing schedules.
Qualifications/Experience:
-B.S. in the biological sciences field is desired and must have taken a college-level course in microbiology.
-The candidate must have biological laboratory experience within industry, particularly with molecular biology techniques and animal handling/veterinary techniques.
-Individuals must have experience working in a BSL-3 and/or BSL-4 environment
-The candidate must receive the necessary vaccinations against anthrax, smallpox, Q fever and other disease-causing agents as needed.
-Candidates MUST be US Citizens
-AALAS certification preferred. Experience working with non-human primates (NHP) preferred!
Salary/funding:
$45-55K/yr + full benefits.
