Position Description:
The WCCB has been operating since 1998 with approval from the Belize Government and is currently located within a 13K acre private, protected property. The Center has successfully rehabilitated, released and monitored 28 black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra) and has more recently begun working with black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi).
Seeking a responsible and experienced keeper to assist in the care of both primate species, but particularly a growing group of spider monkeys recently confiscated from the illegal pet trade. Applicants must be capable and confident of working around potentially aggressive animals, working well and efficiently alone and with others, have excellent observation skills and an interest in animal behavior. Employees follow strict health and behavioral protocols, budget time wisely, and follow written and oral instructions and adapt quickly to new regimens. Natural diet items will be identified and collected on a daily basis. Occasional informal talks presented to guests and visiting schoolchildren.
Qualifications/Experience:
Candidates must have prior experience in care, feeding and restraint of monkeys, preferably from an AZA accredited zoo. Must be presentable and professional in appearance and manner, energetic, physically fit and healthy, non-smoker.
Salary/funding:
Monthly stipend based on experience.
Support
provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Room and three meals per day.
Must provide own transportation to Belize.
