Mission: The mission of the Sumatran Orangutan Society is to benefit, preserve, and protect the Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) and its habitat. We do this by raising awareness about orangutans and the important role they play in Sumatra, and establishing sustainable community-based projects and educational training programmes for the local Sumatran people. To support our mission, we will be active in promoting public awareness throughout the world on the plight and value of this critically endangered species and its unique habitat. We will develop our ongoing educational and awareness programs within Indonesia and around the world, as well as campaigning on the critical issues which threaten the continued existence of orangutans in the wild.
