Research Objectives: The research on the social organization and structure of the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey, Rhinopithecus roxellana, will be conducted by radio tracking and direct observation as well as individual identification from provisioning monkeys in the west ridge troop of Yuhuangmiao of Qinling Mountains of China. After the project done, we intend to confirm the types of fundamental units composed of the troop, and to give a scale to distinguish All-Male-Unit (AMU) and One-Male-Unit (OMU) when troop are resting and moving. Meanwhile, we want to know whether have fusion-fission in the troop and its causation, and what are functions of OMU in reproduction and social system. We also intend to recognize how the monkeys avoid inbreeding by observing adult-male replacement and individual exchanges inter- or intro- OMU and AMU. Finally, we are interesting in replying the problem for natural selection in social organization and structure of primates, and promoting further study for relation in the social structure and environment change. Based on the researching results, the conservation and breeding administrators may make up a plan to protect and breed the primate, and further establish a national park of golden monkey in Qinling Mountain.?
