Special attention is given to acquiring information on techniques or information which can prevent unnecessary duplication of research or reduce, replace or refine techniques and methods with help eliminate animal pain and suffering. Clientele: Government agencies, public and private research institutions, libraries, Animal Care and Use committees, veterinarians, laboratory animal research personnel, the general public and others interested in the humane care and use of animals in research, testing and education. Principal Research Programs: Reference services include database searching, accessing NAL's collection on animal care-related subjects, and expert networking. Provide assistance with search formulation and formal training through AWIC's workshop (when requested). Speakers and/or a table top exhibit for training sessions, conferences or workshops. Conference facilities (150 or less) are available at the NAL for hosting training sessions and for use by groups or individuals. All animals covered under the Federal Laboratory Animal Welfare Act are considered in scope. Laboratory animal species, zoo and exhibit animals and farm animals are included. The collection does not specifically focus on any one species. Audio-visuals, simulation software, journals, newsletters, books and all other information resources are acquired for the NAL collection. Associated Field Sites: We offer brief complimentary searches of AGRICOLA or other relevant databases. More extensive searches are performed on a cost recovery basis. AWIC strives to add to NAL's collection, to enhance its use and to complement other existing collections. If NAL does not cover or have specific information, AWIC staff will network clientele to other experts or library collections. Publications: "Information Resources" (topical - covers AGRICOLA and other information resources as well as selected web sites); "AWIC Bulletin" (quarterly newsletter).No cost for any AWIC publication.
