Chimp Haven (Established 1995)
Director: Linda Brent
Mission: To provide permanent sanctuary for chimpanzees no longer needed for research, as pets, or in the entertainment industry. Chimp Haven is governed by a board of directors and advisory board with expertise in captive chimpanzee management which represent the laboratory, zoo, pharmaceutical and animal protection communities. The sanctuary is located near Shreveport, LA and can currently house 140 chimpanzees. Principal Research Programs: The Learning Programs include an emphasis on studies of chimpanzees which will increase knowledge and ability to appropriately care for them in captivity as well as educational opportunities for the students and the public. No invasive research programs will be supported. Volunteer opportunities and internships are available - see www.chimphaven.org for details. Training Opportunities: Internships and externships are occassionally available for college and graduate level students in primate behavior, enrichment and veterinary care. Financial Aid: Financial aid unavailable. Housing on site may be available.
