Estacao Ecologica Do Tapacura (1975)
Director: Paulo Martins
Research Objectives: Investigation of the reproduction strategies of the common marmoset, "Callithrix jacchus", in a wild population at the ecological station of Tapacura, in Sao Lourenco De Mata, Pernambuco, Brazil. Social and sexual behavior repertoire of the members of various neighbor groups that form one population sample will be investigated, focusing on the interaction between these repertoire and ecological and social pressures. For this purpose, we will try to clarify the extension of the reproductive role of the female, the expression of the suppression of fertility's mechanisms, the investment of the adult male members in the care of the young, and the flux of individuals between social groups. Field Positions and Volunteers: Promotion of a long-term and systematic program, in a population sample: 1) of behavior sample collection; 2) of captures to identify the individuals of various groups and the peripheral individuals in the study area; 3) to take samples of different biological tissues for DNA fingerprinting for kin relationship Training Opportunities: Educational opportunities available for: Undergraduate, Graduate; Field work opportunities available; Program emphasis: Reproductive strategy; Sexual behavior; Marmoset ecology; Financial support usually available; Note: The Ecological Station of Tapacura is supported by the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco. Number of Staff: 13 Associated Field Sites: Mata do Buraquinho, UFPB, Joao Pessoa / Paraiba - Brazil; EFLEX Nisia Floresta, UFRN, Natal / Rio Grande do Norte - Brazil Species Studied: Callithrix jacchus (common marmoset) Last Updated: 1998-03-30 [Edit Entry] [Delete Entry] [Search IDP] |
