C. 20037 USA Phone: 1 (202) 861-3190 Fax: 1 (202) 861-8488 Mission: To assist countries in the development and strengthening of national programs for conservation, reproduction and management of non-human primates as a renewable natural resource in their natural habitat; To promote conservation of these species by the rational production of a limited number of high quality, fully conditioned animals for re-population and availability for biomedical research to address priority public health needs of the countries of the region. Principal Research Programs: Technical and financial resources are mobilized to support the organization of national primate programs and research projects on: Conservation: 1) Conducting field studies of population dynamics, including systematics/taxonomy, distribution abundance, habitat requirements and the impact of human activities on wild primate populations; 2) Developing and implementing wildlife management strategies, including establishment of a captive breeding station (Iquitos, Peru) and semicaptive (Padre and Muyuy Islands) breeding populations, as well as monitoring and protection of wildlife in natural settings; 3) Instituting conservation education and health education programs for local residents; Biomedical Research: Assist countries in the transfer of surplus animals of conservation projects for biomedical research, according to CITES, CDC and USDA regulations. Comments: Under the sponsorship of PAHO, a Regional Primatology Committee for the Americas (CORP) was established in 1990. CORP has as a purpose to ensure the maintenance of the political will of the member countries to safeguard the life of the species of neotropical primates in their natural habitat and strengthening and supporting technical cooperation amoung countries with native populations of primates.
